How I Evaluate ACH Payment Processing Software

I split my evaluation into two layers: baseline requirements every ACH tool must meet and the differentiators—like same-day settlement or multi-location reconciliation—that determine fit.

Core Functionality (Table Stakes For This List)

When I'm selecting tools for my list, I rank each one on a scale from 0 (does not offer the functionality) to 5 (excels in this area) for each core functionality listed below. Then, I calculate the tool's total score into a percentage. Each tool needs to achieve a minimum total score of 65% to be considered for inclusion.

  • ACH Transaction Processing: I check whether a platform handles both debits and credits, supports batch submissions for multi-vendor payouts, and offers same-day ACH for faster settlement.
  • Bank Account Verification: Reducing ACH returns starts here. I look for instant verification options like Plaid alongside fallback methods such as micro-deposits.
  • Recurring & Scheduled Payments: I evaluate how well each tool automates repeat billing—think monthly supplier payments or installment plans for high-ticket retail purchases.
  • NACHA Compliance & Security: Every tool I consider should demonstrate NACHA adherence, and I look for added layers like SOC 2 Type II certification and tokenized storage of bank data.
  • Retail/Ecommerce Integrations: I look for native connectors to the systems retailers actually use—POS platforms, Shopify or BigCommerce storefronts, and accounting tools like QuickBooks or Xero.
  • Reporting & Reconciliation: Matching ACH activity to sales records across locations is where most teams struggle. I evaluate return/NSF tracking and multi-store reporting depth.

Once I have a list of tools that meet this criteria, I consider what sets each platform apart.

Differentiating Factors (What Sets Vendors Apart)

Here's how I compare and contrast different vendors:

Standout Features

Same-day ACH matters for retailers managing tight cash flow cycles. I look for whether expedited settlement is available across all transaction types or restricted to certain plan tiers. Multi-entity management is another key differentiator when a retailer operates several storefronts or legal entities—I evaluate whether the dashboard consolidates reporting across all locations. Surcharging and convenience fee tools are also worth noting, since they let retailers offset ACH costs or incentivize bank payments over cards at checkout.

Beyond Features

Pricing structure is one of the first things I evaluate. Some platforms charge a flat fee per ACH transaction while others take a percentage, and the difference adds up fast for retailers processing hundreds of payments weekly. I also look at transaction limits—growing retailers need room to scale without hitting caps that trigger re-underwriting. Implementation speed matters too, especially for multi-location rollouts where long onboarding timelines delay revenue collection across new stores.

Piano gratuito$0$0.75–$1.00Startup a basso volume
Piano starter$15–$25$0.50Piccole imprese e freelance
Piano business$30–$60$0.25Retailer in crescita e organizzazioni non-profit
Piano enterprise$75–$150Prezzi personalizzatiMerchant ad alto volume e realtà globali

Considerazioni aggiuntive sui costi

  • Commissioni ACH in giornata.

Come vengono gestiti i resi e i chargeback ACH?

Posso elaborare pagamenti ACH internazionali o transfrontalieri?

L’ACH standard funziona solo negli USA.
