We review tools independently, and commissions help fund our testing. See our transparency policy, our methodology, or suggest a tool.

How I Evaluate ecommerce analytics software

I split evaluation into three parts, weighting core functionality most: track sales, revenue, and conversion rates, then connect storefronts and ad channels. Next, I look for predictive demand forecasting, such as projecting holiday inventory needs. Finally, I consider onboarding, support, data accuracy, and pricing.

Core Functionality (Table Stakes For This List)

When I'm selecting tools for my list, I score each one on a scale from 0 (does not offer the functionality) to 5 (excels in this area) for each core functionality listed below. I then convert the total into a percentage to help assess each tool's overall fit, with extra weight on any functionalities I’ve deemed essential.

  • Sales & Revenue Reporting (Essential): I look for orders, revenue, AOV, and conversion trends with product, channel, and date breakdowns for merchandising decisions.
  • Multi-Channel Integration (Essential): I check connections to storefronts, marketplaces, ad networks, and sales channels, plus whether data rolls into one consistent view.
  • Funnel Analysis: I evaluate funnel steps, paths, and drop-off segments by device, source, and customer type to locate checkout friction.
  • Customer Segments & LTV: Cohorts should show repeat purchase rate and LTV by behavior, product, or acquisition source for retention decisions.
  • Marketing Attribution: I compare channel and campaign revenue through stated attribution models, checking whether results support spend and creative decisions.
  • Custom Dashboards & Reports: I look for flexible dashboards, filters, exports, and scheduled sharing so teams see relevant metrics.

Once I have a list of tools that meet the criteria, I consider what sets each platform apart.

Differentiating Factors (What Sets Vendors Apart)

Here's how I compare and contrast different vendors:

Standout Features

I check whether a tool offers predictive demand forecasting, since projecting inventory needs based on seasonality and sales history prevents stockouts during peak periods. Cohort and RFM segmentation is another separator—I look for automatic grouping by recency, frequency, and monetary value so you can target re-engagement campaigns at lapsing buyers without building manual reports. I also evaluate marketplace data blending, because brands selling on Amazon and owned storefronts need one unified view to compare channel performance accurately.

Beyond Features

I check how quickly a tool connects to your existing storefront—platforms like Shopify or BigCommerce should sync in minutes, not days of tagging work. Data freshness matters just as much, since stale numbers lead to bad ad spend calls; I look for near-real-time syncing and clear reconciliation when figures drift from platform-native reports. I also evaluate whether vendor support teams actually understand ecommerce funnels, not just dashboards.
